Description
1858 peddlers wagon built by Pendergast of Nottingham, New Hampshire for George Plummer. Typical of those used in Maine to furnish rural families with goods such as tinware, fabrics, and notions. Vehicle has locking drawers and compartments. A peddler would cover long distances travelling weeks at a time bartering and selling goods and wares. These peddlers were often the equivalent of today's newpaper, bringing news from outlying towns and villages. Axle and shafts are typical of early construction practices.
